FACE-to-face Classroom Design

Move beyond ‘chalk and talk’ and design face-to-face courses built around meaningful, authentic practice.

About the Face-to-Face Classroom Design Modules

Despite waves of new learning technologies, face-to-face classroom learning has remained a constant.

But like any delivery medium, its effectiveness depends far less on where learning happens and far more on how it is designed.

This content stream focuses on helping you design classroom sessions that prioritise practice, interaction and application, rather than presentation.

The modules show you how to:
  • design classroom experiences built around meaningful practice
  • select activities that genuinely support skill development, and
  • create sessions that help learners apply what they learn back in the workplace

What are the available modules?

There are two modules available in our Face-to-Face Classroom content stream:

FFC01: A flexible blueprint for classroom course design

This module focuses on a highly flexible and adaptable design flow that can be used when creating face-to-face classroom sessions.

This module covers:

  • the stages of the learning journey that best support skill transfer
  • the key considerations and principles at work during each of those stages, and
  • different ways to apply the design model based on content complexity and learner need.

Module length: 1 hour

FFC02: Why practice makes perfect

Practice. Does it make perfect? The short answer is a very definite 'yes'. The caveat - if it's done right.

This module covers:

  • the key approaches and principles for delivering effective practice activities to your learners
  • the most (and least) successful types of activities, and
  • the crucial role different kinds of feedback play in supporting your learners.

Module length: 1 hour

Important note: if you are including EID03 in your module selection, you don’t need to include this module, as there is some content overlap between modules.

Instead we will provide a brief re-cap of generic, (non e-learning specific) key points from EID03.

Designing learning that works when the session ends

Learning Re-Framed explores how learning design choices shape what people actually do back at work.

If you’re re-visiting traditional classroom approaches and want to think more deeply about practice, application and transfer, you’re very welcome to join and get weekly insights.

Putting it all together

If you are ready to put your modules together into a customised in-house course, take a look at the How does it all work? page.

This explains how you can put together the modules you want into a customised programme.

  • The minimum length for a programme is half a day face-to-face or 3 hours of virtual classroom time
  • The maximum length is determined by however many modules you want to include

A useful reference, not a prescription...

The Essential Step-by-Step Guide to Instructional Design Success offers a practical overview of designing learning with clarity, structure and purpose.

It’s particularly useful if you’re revisiting classroom design fundamentals or looking for a clearer framework to support practice-based learning.

If you’re interested in how these ideas connect to wider questions about learning, work and change, you might also enjoy subscribing to Learning Re-Framed, which explores those themes on an ongoing basis.
